Diabetes isn’t slowing down—it’s accelerating. And it’s affecting more people, at younger ages, than ever before.

According to the latest statistics:

  • 38 million Americans are living with diabetes
  • 1 in 5 people with diabetes don’t know they have it
  • Rates of Type 2 diabetes in youth have doubled over the past 20 years
  • Prediabetes affects 96 million adults—more than 1 in 3 Americans

(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024)

These numbers aren’t just alarming—they’re a call to action.

Why Early Detection Matters

One of the most dangerous aspects of diabetes is how quietly it can develop. Many people have elevated blood sugars for years before symptoms appear. By the time they notice changes—fatigue, thirst, frequent urination, vision issues—damage may already be occurring to the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves (American Diabetes Association, 2024) .

Early detection through regular lab work and screenings is critical. The earlier we intervene, the greater the chance of preventing or delaying these complications.

The Weight & Insulin Resistance Connection

Two of the biggest drivers behind rising diabetes rates are:

  • Excess weight
  • Insulin resistance

Insulin resistance happens when the body’s cells no longer respond well to insulin, forcing the pancreas to produce more to keep blood sugars in check. Over time, this system can’t keep up, leading to prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes (DeFronzo, 2009) .

The good news? Both excess weight and insulin resistance are highly responsive to nutrition and lifestyle changes—especially when those changes are customized to your unique metabolism (Knowler et al., 2002) .

Where Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) Fits In

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is more than just “healthy eating advice.”
It’s a structured, evidence-based approach to using food and nutrition as part of medical treatment—delivered by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

At Metabolic RDs, we use MNT to:

  • Create weight management plans that stabilize blood sugars
  • Teach you what and when to eat to reduce insulin resistance
  • Incorporate lab testing to tailor your nutrition to your specific needs
  • Build long-term habits that can lower A1c, improve energy, and reduce reliance on medication

Studies show that MNT provided by a dietitian can reduce A1c levels by 0.3% to 2.0% in people with Type 2 diabetes and delay or prevent the onset of diabetes in high-risk individuals (Franz et al., 2017) .

Who Can Benefit from MNT for Diabetes?

  • People with prediabetes who want to reverse it
  • Individuals with Type 2 diabetes aiming to improve blood sugar control
  • Those with a family history of diabetes who want to lower their risk
  • People already managing complications who want to protect their health

Your Next Step

If you haven’t had your A1c, fasting glucose, or post-meal blood sugar checked in the past year—make it a priority. If your numbers are high, remember: you have options.

With the right plan, support, and accountability, you can:

  • Lose weight in a sustainable way
  • Reduce insulin resistance
  • Protect your long-term health

At Metabolic RDs, we work in-person and via telehealth to help you take control of your health and build a plan that fits your life—not the other way around.

Your health is worth the investment. Let’s work together to protect it.
